Rajasthan’s Foreign Tourists Are Rewriting the State’s Travel Map, Bypassing the Golden Triangle for Bundi, Jawai, and Beyond
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

BizareXpedition™ Services Pvt. Ltd. reports a surge in repeat travellers choosing private circuits through Rajasthan’s smaller towns over the traditional Delhi-Agra-Jaipur route

For fifty years, a first trip to India has meant the Golden Triangle trip with  Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, in that fixed order. Now a growing number of travellers, most of them on their second or third visit, are quietly abandoning that itinerary and driving into the rest of Rajasthan instead, and BizareXpedition™ Services Pvt. Ltd. is building the private circuits to take them there.

In towns like Bundi, where blue-washed lanes barely wide enough for two cows to pass sit above a fourteenth-century stepwell more than nine storeys deep, travellers are increasingly finding no tour buses and no other visible tourists at all. Ten years ago this would have been unusual. Today it is close to a pattern: travellers who have already ticked the Taj Mahal, Amber Fort, and City Palace off their list are returning to ask what else Rajasthan has to offer, and almost none of it lies in the three cities the state is famous for.

The shift is borne out in the numbers. Rajasthan’s foreign tourist visits climbed from under four and a half lakh in 2020 to a record 20.72 lakh in 2024, a rise the state tourism ministry puts at over 300 percent across six years, according to official figures (4.46 lakh in 2020, 0.35 lakh in 2021, 3.97 lakh in 2022, 17.00 lakh in 2023, 20.72 lakh in 2024, and 19.45 lakh in 2025). In a year when India’s overall foreign arrivals fell by more than twelve percent, Rajasthan’s decline was less than half that, a resilience state officials attribute to renewed interest beyond the classic circuit.

A Route Built Around What Travellers Already Have Planned

None of the towns rewriting Rajasthan’s map require a flight or special permit, an advantage over India’s Himalayan circuits. Every one sits within roughly half a day’s drive of Jaipur, Jodhpur, or Udaipur, the three airports most Rajasthan itineraries already use. Bundi is about 3.5 hours from Jaipur, or just 35 minutes from Kota’s railhead. Shekhawati’s Mandawa is roughly 3 hours from Jaipur. Jawai is 3 to 3.5 hours from Udaipur or Jodhpur. Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur sit 2 to 2.5 hours from Udaipur. Chand Baori is under 2 hours from Jaipur, and Nagaur is about 2.5 hours from Jodhpur, meaning a “beyond the triangle” loop functions less as a separate expedition than as an extension of a trip a traveller was likely planning anyway.

What the Circuit Includes

In Bundi, the Garh Palace’s centuries-old murals still hold their colour, and Raniji ki Baori, one of more than fifty stepwells in town, drops roughly fourteen storeys through carved sandstone. In Shekhawati, spanning Mandawa, Nawalgarh, and Fatehpur, hundreds of nineteenth-century merchant havelis remain painted floor to ceiling with frescoes, many accessible only through a local caretaker with a key.

In Jawai, in Rajasthan’s Pali district, leopards live openly across granite hills shared with Rabari herding communities, with sighting rates frequently cited above 90 percent. The benchmark camp, Suján Jawai, runs just ten tents and pairs leopard drives with birdwatching and community walks. Kumbhalgarh’s fort wall runs 36 kilometres, the second-longest continuous wall on Earth, while nearby Ranakpur’s Jain temple holds 1,444 uniquely carved marble pillars across 24 halls and 80 domes. Chand Baori, in the village of Abhaneri, descends thirteen storeys through 3,500 symmetrical ninth-century steps. Nagaur’s camel and cattle fair, held every January or February, draws around 25,000 camels alongside a lower-key version of Pushkar’s more famous gathering.

Practical Details for Travellers

Peak season runs October through March, with daytime temperatures between roughly 10°C and 27°C. Rates outside the November-February window typically drop 30 to 50 percent. A standard e-Tourist visa covers the entire route; no special permits are required. BizareXpedition recommends a private car with driver over self-driving, citing variable road quality between smaller towns.

Costs per person, per day range from ₹2,500-4,000 for budget travel (guesthouses, street food, shared transport), ₹6,000-12,000 for mid-range (heritage boutique stays, private car, sit-down meals), to ₹18,000-35,000-plus for luxury circuits at properties such as Suján Jawai or Rawla Narlai.

BizareXpedition offers three itinerary formats: a 5-night loop (Jaipur–Bundi–Shekhawati–Jaipur) as an entry-level add-on; a 7-night heritage-and-wildlife route (Udaipur–Kumbhalgarh/Ranakpur–Jawai–Jodhpur); and a full 10-night circuit covering Shekhawati, Bundi, Chand Baori, Kumbhalgarh/Ranakpur, Jawai, and Nagaur.

The company also advises travellers on responsible practices specific to the region, including carrying a water filter given limited bottled-water infrastructure in small towns, spending locally at family-run havelis and dhabas, and observing modest dress and photography etiquette in craft villages and Bishnoi communities, whose conservation traditions predate the modern environmental movement by roughly three hundred years.

An Honest Safety Section

Rajasthan’s tourist-facing towns carry solid safety infrastructure for solo and female travellers, though the state’s broader social indicators for women lag the national picture. The most common risks are low-stakes scams, inflated fares or unsolicited offers of “exclusive” access, nearly all avoidable by declining transactions with anyone who approaches first. Travellers are also advised that the newly approved Kota-Bundi airport, cleared by the Union Cabinet in October 2025, is not yet operational, and that Chand Baori is best visited at opening before day-tripper crowds arrive from around 11 a.m.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do travellers need extra permits for these towns?

No. A standard e-Tourist visa covers all of them; none require the special permits sometimes needed for Himalayan border regions.

2. Can this route be done as a self-drive trip?

Technically yes, but it is uncommon among domestic or foreign travellers, and road quality between smaller towns makes a private driver the more comfortable choice for a first pass through the region.

3. Is Jawai worth visiting only for the leopards?

No. Jawai’s birdlife, with over 300 recorded species, and its Rabari community walks are close to equally strong reasons to visit, and many travellers remember these as much as the leopard sightings.

4. How many towns fit into one trip?

It depends on the nights available. BizareXpedition’s three itinerary formats range from a five-night add-on to an eleven-night complete circuit.

5. Is the route suitable for families with children?

Bundi and Shekhawati work well for most ages, while desert camps and long fort walks are more comfortable from around age seven or eight upward.
