At the JD School of Design, we believe that education is not confined to a traditional classroom but extends into the arena of issues that affect not only our communities but also the wider world. As part of our commitment towards raising awareness and inciting change, this October, we proudly took part in Pinktober – an annual event centred on breast cancer awareness.
In many ways, there is no end in sight to the prevalence of breast cancer throughout the world, as it touches countless women and their families. On this occasion of Pinktober, we should also propagate early detection and regular check-ups for affected individuals while showing them the necessary support. We at JD School of Design availed ourselves of this platform to engage our students in meaningful conversations, education, and advocacy to inspire them to be ambassadors for change.
A Campaign Rooted in Awareness
Pinktober at JD School of Design was to be an informed and empowering space for our students, not only to inform but to empower them to action. During the month, activities, workshops, and events were coordinated to educate on the signs, symptoms, and risk factors associated with breast cancer.
The goal was to empower the students with information that one day may be a matter of life or death. Through encouragement of self-examinations and fostering awareness in early detection, the campaign sought to try and dissipate the stigma and fear related to discussing breast cancer. In the same way, the students were empowered with information about how to consult medical practitioners and regular mammograms, especially for women above the age of 40 years.
Design for a Cause
Creativity is always at the heart of everything we do at JD School of Design. Among other things, our students were challenged to apply their design skills to contribute to the Pinktober campaign in unique and impactful ways. Among the events that led up to the climax of the month was the Pink Design Challenge, where a call to design inspired by the theme of Pinktober was extended to all the students. From fashion pieces to graphics designs and interior concepts, what a marvellous combination of ways that would show their talent while pleading for breast cancer awareness.
The challenge motivated creativity not only in coming up with innovative designs but also in the artistic and collaborative approach, as they were able to express solidarity. In using pink colour, associated with breast cancer awareness, students create designs to represent hope, strength, and resilience. The designs were to be placed all over the campus, thereby making it a very visibly potent campaign reminding everyone about the need for breast cancer awareness.
Educational Workshops and Guest Speakers
One of the key hallmarks of Pinktober was getting students up to speed on the knowledge they need to navigate the complications associated with breast cancer. During the month, we conducted educational workshops attended by healthcare professionals, survivors, and advocates, where we showcased early detection methods, risk factors, and the need to schedule check-ups regularly.
The workshops also provided space for asking candid questions and sharing experiences, and insights from people who are directly affected by the disease. Undoubtedly, the most powerful experience of the campaign was hearing the stories of courage and perseverance of those breast cancer survivors whose experiences touched every visitor. Their experiences become a formidable reminder of how strong the human spirit is and the necessity of community support.
A Show of Solidarity
Pinktober did not only teach but, instead, brought the people of this society together to show solidarity with the suffering people due to breast cancer. JD School of Design had Pink Day where the students, faculties, and staff were asked to wear pink as a symbol of solidarity with the suffering people. The campus turned pink, signifying unity in hope.
At JD School of Design, we believe that our students are change-makers not only in the design circle but also in a meaningful transformation in society. Pinktober brought to our students an opportunity to engage with something greater than their study- cum- career, calling them and insisting that they amplify creativity to be drivers of change.
The Pinktober campaign was a complete success in creating awareness and also instilled a sense of responsibility, care and understanding among our students. After learning about breast cancer, sharing knowledge, and advocating for early detection, our students are part of the much bigger movement against the disease.
Closing the Pinktober campaign with its message does not beat around the bush: awareness is prevention’s first step. From our part, the JD School of Design is proud to have been part of the global effort to spread information concerning breast cancer, and we will keep that conversation alive throughout the year. We stand united in the fight against breast cancer, and we look forward to the future with initiatives that promote health, awareness, and change.
