India’s jewelry sector is poised for a major leap, with the government pledging sweeping reforms aimed at making India the world’s top jewelry export hub, announced Jitin Prasada, minister of state for commerce and industry on Friday.
“Prime Minister Modi’s administration is committed to scaling up infrastructure, reducing overseas dependency on raw materials, and expanding our sector’s global reach,” minister said while addressing the ‘Gems and Jewelry Summit’ organized by Indian Chamber of Commerce .
Outlining plans to tackle key industry challenges, Prasad highlighted the government’s efforts to enhance supply chains and invest in best-in-class facilities like Gujarat’s Common Facility Centers. “We aim to leverage India’s unique strengths—our skilled labor, cultural heritage, and expanding influence worldwide—to drive substantial export growth and job creation,” he noted.
Prasad encouraged industry collaboration, emphasizing that “by sharing best practices and working together, we can forge a path that firmly establishes India as the leader in jewelry exports.”
Atul Kumar Tiwari, Secretary of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, also addressed the gathering, underscoring the role of India’s gem and jewelry sector in shaping the country’s global competitiveness.
“Our country’s gem and jewelry industry plays a crucial role in making India competitive on the world stage. Innovation, skill development, and modernization are essential for India to stand out, and we have already made significant strides through initiatives like the Vishwakarma scheme,” he said.
Tiwari stated. “However, this work must go beyond economic growth; it needs to foster well-being and sustainable employment. The industry’s future lies in aligning traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology to enhance productivity and design innovation.”
Drawing attention to the progress in states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, he added, “Collaborative efforts between industry councils and government have successfully uplifted local artisans and introduced modern skills.”
Echoing these sentiments, Suvankar Sen, Co-Chair of the ICC National Expert Committee on Jewelry and Lifestyle and MD of Senco Jewelers, said, “Over the past five years, our industry has achieved global growth, but now we must unite to elevate India’s role on the world stage. Through government support, expanded infrastructure, and a commitment to innovation, we can overcome challenges in costs, working capital, and job creation. As we open to international markets, collaboration across our manufacturing hubs is key to building a skilled workforce and advancing industry standards.”
