Before A Voice Made of Ink became a book, it was a collection of feelings that had nowhere else to go.
Some emotions arrive loudly, demanding attention. Others remain hidden beneath everyday conversations, buried under responsibilities, expectations, and time. For 22-year-old Soumyajit Naskar, these silent emotions gradually transformed into poetry, eventually finding a home within the pages of his debut collection, A Voice Made of Ink.
Growing up in Jadavpur, Kolkata, Soumyajit discovered early that words possessed a unique power. They could preserve memories, ease heartache, and express feelings that often remained unspoken. While many found comfort in conversation, he found solace in poetry. Shayari, verses, and reflective writing became his way of understanding the world around him and the emotions within.
Today, Soumyajit is a B.Tech student in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar. Amid lectures, assignments, and the demands of a rigorous academic journey, he continued nurturing a parallel passion—one built not on equations and circuits, but on emotions and expression.
The inspiration behind A Voice Made of Ink came from someone deeply personal: a loved one whose presence left a lasting imprint on his life. Through moments of affection, longing, joy, and heartbreak, this individual became the catalyst for countless reflections that would eventually shape the collection. What began as private thoughts slowly evolved into poetry that speaks to universal human experiences.
The result is a book that explores love, pain, dreams, regrets, and the countless emotions that exist between beginnings and endings. Each poem carries the weight of personal experience while inviting readers to discover pieces of their own stories within its verses. The collection serves as a reminder that feelings often left unsaid still deserve a voice—and sometimes that voice emerges through ink.
The collection has been honoured with the 21st Century Emily Dickinson Award, recognizing the emotional depth and sincerity that define Soumyajit’s poetic voice.
What makes this collection particularly compelling is its honesty. Rather than seeking grand declarations, the poems embrace vulnerability. They linger in the quiet spaces between words, where memories, dreams, and unanswered questions often reside. Through simple yet evocative imagery, Soumyajit invites readers into a deeply personal journey while allowing them the freedom to interpret the poems through their own experiences.
For the young poet, writing is more than a creative pursuit—it is an emotional necessity. It is a way of preserving moments that might otherwise fade and giving shape to feelings that often resist explanation. His poetry reflects the realities of modern relationships, the ache of separation, the beauty of hope, and the resilience that emerges from heartbreak.
In many ways, A Voice Made of Ink is not merely a collection of poems. It is a conversation between the heart and the page, between memories and imagination, between silence and expression.
As Soumyajit Naskar takes his first step into the literary world, he brings with him a voice that is thoughtful, sincere, and deeply human. Through A Voice Made of Ink, he reminds readers that some stories are not told through speeches or conversations—they are written quietly, line by line, until silent emotions finally find their voice.
